I love Dorothy and Joyce’s friendship aaah

I know I complain about writing a lot but STORIES ARE REALLY COOL, characters are cool characters going through situations and conflicts and having to decide how to handle them and coming out changed is cool, characters’ relationships are especially cool, the fact that people can all take the basic conflicts and spin wildly different takes on them is cool, trying to figure out how to handle storytelling problems is often frustrating but still cool, settings and how they affect everything are cool, the way different media tackle storytelling differently is cool, stories

Oh wow did not realize it was 1 am wtf

I’ve been working on the final scene of this thing for days and it’s mostly one long conversation and at this point I’m worried it’s probably a mess but at least (I think) it’s not a rushed mess like the ending of the first draft.

Mostly I’m 1. So ready to be done with this thing 2. Concerned I’m not as close to finished as I think and that my next pass will not be just a final proofreading 3. How does writing work oh my god 4. lazy

It’s interesting how our experience of media changes over time.

negativity toward p4 I guess

ok I have two questions about gender and fandom and I’m pretty sure the answer to both of them is “your intent doesn’t matter if other people think you’re being gross” but I want that confirmed

The thing with…

I’m not going to go in depth here about what is and isn’t wrong because tbh it makes me antsy, but a few alternatives come to mind:

1. One could at least say ‘cis mpreg’ when referring to that particular subset of fanfics, to help avoid the assumption that all men have cis male anatomy.

2. Why not simply do transcanons instead of cis swaps?  They at least have the potential to be empowering, and still offer a chance to explore gender and how it affects characters’ lives (with more options, even!).  If nothing else, please do not refer to them as ‘genderbends,’ as that is to my knowledge a slur.

1. I feel that “mpreg” is a word closer to a genre than any kind of scientific concept. If a transman were pregnant, I would call that a case of “male pregnancy,” but I would not call it “mpreg.” Similarly, there are some odd medical cases where cismen carry their chimeric twin in their abdomen — this is not mpreg, either. “Mpreg” is like “yaoi” — it’s not simply a concept, but a lot of associated baggage along with it, too. That said, we collectively stopped using the word “yaoi” in unironic contexts to mean anything else than the grossest most absurd, well, yaoi. I could see an argument for avoiding using the word “mpreg” in casual contexts unless you mean that particular trend in bad yaoi media.

2. Transcanons necessarily invoke the experience of being trans, which is both incredibly rich and incredibly difficult to do properly. Also, it seems to me that (owing to imperfect execution or whatever) these could easily be as offensive as (or more offensive than) the traditional cisswap style “genderbends.” (Incidentally, I’d like to know how that counts as a slur, since to my knowledge it’s not used against noncis people?)

1. It is definitely referencing a specific concept, yes.  My suggestion wasn’t a matter of the nature of the concept so much as an idea of how one might avoid the casual erasure inherent in the label for it, though I guess the idea is still ‘lol men getting pregnant’ whatever one calls it.

2. A badly done transcanon done by a cis person can definitely be problematic, yes.  I didn’t mean ‘it is always a good idea for everyone to do transcanons of any sort’ so much as ‘hey if you want to explore gender and don’t want to upset people through cis swaps, there are other options.’  Obviously after that point it’s still up to people to consider how those other options might be upsetting.

I have definitely heard that ‘genderbend’ is used in a hateful way against trans people, but it’s not something I have more knowledge of than that.
